Flitwick motorcycle racing news

Flitwick motorcycles have a long association with the racing world. Steve Linsdell, owner has raced motorcycles on the track and road since 1979, specialising in more recent years at the challenging Isle of Man  Manx Grand Prix road races.

We have been proud to sponsor many riders over the years including Matt Llewellyn, Nigel "Cap" Davies, and Fernando Mendes .

Olie Linsdell, 27 year old son of Steve and Carole currently competes under the Flitwick Motorcycles banner,  competing at top level in the the major Road races, North West 200, Isle of man TT, and Ulster Grand Prix.

In 2007, At the age of only 19, he took his first win at the North West 200, and two decisive wins at his Debut at the Manx Grand prix, on the challenging TT circuit. He also holds the world record for the biggest winning margin on the Island circuit.

For 2016, we continue our support of Olie, who will compete in both classic and selected modern races, under the Umbrella of Team Flitwick Motorcycles.

25 year old David Linsdell, Steve and Caroles' youngest Son competes with the Classic Motorcycle Club, and for 2016 will ride a Camier framed 500 Yamaha.

Team Flitwick Yamaha and our rider set off to the Isle of Man for the 2010 TT races with high hopes.
Sponsors Steve Bond, Wheeler Electrical and SMV engineering all came ups trumps, funding the fleet of Yamaha machinery. To add icing on the cake, Olie was also to ride a Moto2 spec bike, with a tuned Supersport engine, courtesy of FTR engineering in the senior race.
We had had problems setting up the Superbike at the North West. But weíre hopeful that the settings obtained there would assist in getting it near for the Island challenging 37 Ĺ mile pure road circuit.
Arriving on the Friday evening, we were shown into paddock A, to our designated pit area, and set up the truck and awning, plus the pop up addition, to enable room for the fantastic Moto2 bike. We had expected to be using our new team truck, which was scheduled to be ready that week, unfortunately had been informed that the lead time was much longer than anticipated.
The team consists of Steve Linsdell, tuner and team co-ordinator, Mervyn Hacket, chief tech, myself Carole, chief cook bottle washer and agony Aunt, Janet timekeeper and team support, plus Steve Bond, sponsor and pit crew. In addition Mark Hurrell joins us to add to the pit crew later in the week.
Unfortunately due to a Death in the Family, Mervyn and Janet could only join us on Wednesday of race week, so Steve Ruth, previous TT singles winner stepped in to spanner and pit in Mervsí absence.
We were also joined by Joan, from Spain, Moto2 Tech supplied by FTR to look after their machine. Later Sponsors Mark from FTR, Peter Wheeler from Wheeler Electrical, John and Olaug from SMV and Graham Leah from Tuitus would join us.
We were lucky enough to be allocated a Tent in the pit lane, sharing ours with none other than the great Guy Martin and Wilson Craig.

The first practice session on Saturday was cancelled due to the Weather, but the rest of practice week was near perfect conditions. Unfortunately we experiences mechanical problems with the Superstock and Supersport machinery, which caused two pickups and wasted practice times. The Superbike was still, despite our best efforts giving serious handling problems, which made it impossible to get good times. The Moto2 conversely ran well from the first, and despite Olie only taking it out for three (very noisy) laps, enabled him to do nearly 122 MPH from a standing start.
The first Supersport race saw Olie gaining a Silver replica, and 16th place, putting him 6th equal in the privateers Cup.
Due to the stoppages during practice, we ran out of time to make meaningful improvements to the Superbike, and so Olie was faced with testing our last changes as he set off of in the race proper, down Bray hill. He tried his best, but was unable to lay down the power without the bike weaving, so regretfully had no option but to retire on lap two in the pits.
The Superstock race was going to be challenging, with the big BMís and Kawasakiís ruling the roost this year, but he was up into 20th place when the selector shaft gave up in the gearbox, forcing him to retire at Alpine. A long wait was in order, until the roads opened, and we were able to collect him- where we found SMVís John, Olaug, and their friends John and Alison keeping him company, having got there before we could- thanks Guys!
The second Supersport race had been postponed due to Weather, and then ran at short notice later in the day. Olie had no problems and ran smoothly, but the last part under yellow flags, meaning no overtaking, following two serious accidents. Olie finished a creditable 18th, and gained another Replica, albeit a Bronze. We later found that Paul Dobbs, friend and respected TT racer had sadly lost his life at Ballagary, and Martin Loicht, from Vienna also at Quarry bends- RIP.
The final race on the Friday was the senior, and Olie was up for the challenge on the light FTR Moto2. Most machinery run in the class are Superbikes, and it is only as the dispensation of the organisers that a 600 can be run. As the machine runs under Moto gp2 rules, we were also given a dispensation to run unsilenced pipes, so the sound as he left the start finish was awesome! The senior is a six lap race, so two pit stops for fuelling are necessary. The bike runs a slipper clutch, which makes starting very difficult when the bike is warm, and our pit stop was a long one as a result, leaving Olie in 23rd place. As Olie arrived at Quarter Bridge, the race was red flagged, due to Guy Martin crashing out at Ballagary, and the subsequent fire ball that ensued.
The restart was over 4 laps, and Olie was up into 21st as he arrived in the pits for refuelling. It was then noticed that water had started to drip from the fairing lower, and a broken water pipe clamp was found- so a retirement was unavoidable. - gutted!
During the rerun Conor Cummins, Manx racing hero, and Olieís Team mate with Black Horse Yamaha in 2008, who had led the Superbike race before mechanical problems stopped his bike crashed his Mcadoo Kawasaki at the Veranda, and sustained serious injury as a result. He is currently receiving ongoing Hospital treatment on his back, Arm and Knee. Team Flitwick wish him a speedy recovery.
So all in all, a disappointing and eventful TT, but with two replicas and no accidents, for us, better than 2009.
Next meeting is the Barry Sheene road race meeting, at Oliverís Mount in Scarborough Yorkshire on the 4th July, where Olie will ride the SMV Supersport Yamaha, and Giovanni Cabbassiís fabulous Paton BIC 500, to resume the battle with Ryan Farquhar from 2009- bring it on........
