Flitwick motorcycle racing news

Flitwick motorcycles have a long association with the racing world. Steve Linsdell, owner has raced motorcycles on the track and road since 1979, specialising in more recent years at the challenging Isle of Man  Manx Grand Prix road races.

We have been proud to sponsor many riders over the years including Matt Llewellyn, Nigel "Cap" Davies, and Fernando Mendes .

Olie Linsdell, 27 year old son of Steve and Carole currently competes under the Flitwick Motorcycles banner,  competing at top level in the the major Road races, North West 200, Isle of man TT, and Ulster Grand Prix.

In 2007, At the age of only 19, he took his first win at the North West 200, and two decisive wins at his Debut at the Manx Grand prix, on the challenging TT circuit. He also holds the world record for the biggest winning margin on the Island circuit.

For 2016, we continue our support of Olie, who will compete in both classic and selected modern races, under the Umbrella of Team Flitwick Motorcycles.

25 year old David Linsdell, Steve and Caroles' youngest Son competes with the Classic Motorcycle Club, and for 2016 will ride a Camier framed 500 Yamaha.

Olie at the recent Cookstown meeting
Team Flitwick Yamaha set off on the 29th May for the TT looking forward to a successful and busy TT fortnight.

Olie had had a successful North West 200, with a podium placing and two top 15 placings on the very wet triangle course. He followed this up with a very successful meeting at the Barry Sheene Classic races at Oliverís mount Scarborough, second only to Ryan Farquhar. Both riding Paton 500's, they swapped place in several nail biting clashes, and both broke the 16 year old race and lap record held for 16 years by Bob Heath.

So it was with high hopes we arrived in the Isle of Man late Friday, setting up ready for Saturday evenings practice.

Olie had a very busy race schedule mapped out- with Superstock, supersport and Superbike Yamahas, 125 and 250 two stroke Hondas for the Billown TT, and a ride in the first TTXGP clean emissions one lap race.

Saturdays practice went without a hitch, as did Monday and Tuesday. He was running in the top 6 in the Supersport, and set his first 122+ lap during his first ride on Pete Beales fantastic Yamaha Superbike, a shot to the bows of the current leaders.

The top 30 race numbers go off first during practice, with the remaining field following on, so Olie rode the Flitwick R6 first each session, meaning that he had to alternate the bigger bikes as there is only one session for all solos per night.

Practice weather was perfect, but each evening the first sessions were delays due to newcomerís laps, cows on the track, the list goes on.

Wednesday's plan was for Olie to do two laps on the R6, then straight out on the Superbike, with two on that.
The first lap on the 600 saw Olie up to third fastest and fastest through the speed traps, and the second lap improved sector times up to Sulby. The next sector is Ramsey. Olie did not appear.
He carries a mobile phone to ring in case of breakdown or fuel issues, so straight away we knew he was likely to have crashed out.

The section between Sulby and Ramsey is mostly fast and furious, so it was with trepidation that I walked to the rider retirement office, to find out what had happened.
When I was asked to come in, sit down and close the door, I knew it was bad. Olie had come off on the very fast section at Glen Duff, and had been air-meddeed to Nobles Hospital.

Steve I and Kirsty, Olieísí girlfriend drove to the hospital. Merv and Pete stayed behind to sort out the bikes and lock up the Truck and awning.

We were told he was conscious, but had leg injuries, and was being assessesed. Once that had been carried out we were allowed in to the Emergency section, to find him with a broken femur, a badly damaged knee, a damaged elbow, and covered in abrasions. He had not lost consciousness, and could remember what happened.

The description pointed to a sudden puncture, or possibly a steering damper issue, which caused to bike to veer uncontrollably to the left. When it became apparent to Olie that he would be off, he pushed himself forward off the bike, which then hit the high kerb and launched itself 20-30 feet in the air, through a tree, and into the field 100 yards the other side. Olie meantime bounced some 140 yards down the road, with every inch of his body getting a battering.

In the early hours of the morning Olieís leg was pinned and plated, and the next day his knee and elbow stitched back together. The knee injury is such that he ground his knee cap down, and thinned the tendons, plus there is a section where there is no skin left, but at present it is unlikely that he will need a graft, as first thought.

All in all he is a very lucky lad; a get off at 155 mph on one of the fastest sections of the mountain course can often end in a different way.

The new slogan for his bikes, coined by Saul is "sponsored by God" and we think that just about sums it up.

Olie is hopeful that he will be fit enough for the Ulster in August and back on the Island for the Manx GP.
The bike is to all intents and purposes a write off, so I may be smiling sweetly at the wonderful Andy Smith, at Yamaha UK sometime this week.

Special mentions must go to Merv, Janet, the Bond family, and Shed for their special support and being there when we needed them. To Peter Wheeler, Matt Jackson, Peter Berwick, Pete Beale, Hils and Phil, all at SMV, Rick Simpson and all other sponsors and supporters for their patience and understanding, even though their Bikes stood idle, and last but not least to Kirsty (now re- nicknamed Nursty) who has looked after my boy with dedication, I am sure he couldn't have got through it as well without you. I hope I have not missed anyone out, please forgive me if I have.

Thanks to all others that have sent messages of support, it's good to know how highly he is thought of. Olie will be updating his website, and replying to the many personal messages he received as soon as possible.
