Olie in the points at Knockhill BSB Superstock 600 12 August 2008
Knockhill was the start of a busy month for team Black Horse Yamaha. Three days at Knockhill, followed by going straight over to Ireland for the Ulster GP, then back over to Cadwell the following weekend.
Flying with Girlfriend Helen to Edinburgh on Thursday evening, Olie was picked up by Sharpy who had driven up the day before, and arrived at the circuit that evening.
Knockhill is a track that Olie enjoys, despite breaking his wrist and Scaphoid there in 2005. The weather usually played a big part in any meetings at Knockhill, Scotland and there was likely to be rain, snow, gales, sun and everything in between over the weekend! Olie was determined to get out of the rut he was stuck in since the TT and try and get an improved result, as well as improving the bike ready for the remainder of the season.

The first session was to be the only truly dry session of the whole weekend.
Immediately the setup felt very comfortable and Olie kept on chipping away at the times, reminding himself of the track because he hadnít been there since 2006. Ending up in 12th position in free practice, with a lap time of 53.749, 0.800 seconds from pole position was a boost.
There were a few little changes that the Team wanted to make before the first qualifying session the next day, just to fine tune the setup slightly, and Olie was feeling confident of finding more time and achieving the result that he needed to boost his confidence.
Unfortunately the next day began soaking wet. Olie hadnít ridden in the wet since seperasting the A-C joint in his shoulder at Thruxton. Normally he loves the wet weather conditions and go really well in them but right from the off he didn't feel at all comfortable, with slippery conditions giving the feeling of riding on ice! Coming in to make a few changes, it was fould that whatever was tried it didít improve the situation. Olie was therefore bitterly disappointed to end the session in 34th position and for once was praying for dry weather for second qualifying!

Thankfully the day got drier and by the time the second session started there was a narrow dry line. Getting the bit between his teeth, Olie pushed on hard, even over the damp bits. It was very difficult to fully commit because of he narrow dry line but as the session progressed it got dryer and he improved his position to 14th on the grid. It was still only 0.8 from pole, and itís always nice to be less than one second because it puts you in the ballpark.

Morning warm up was held in the same conditions as qualifying and Olie was pleased to end up in 13th fastest, slightly better than in qualifying. He knew that if he could get a good start a strong position was possible.
Knockhill is a very hard track to pass on and if you get held up for a few laps behind someone it is very difficult to pass because the only real passing point is at the hairpin. All the time youíre stuck behind someone the riders in front will be pulling away.

The next day the race was exactly the same. It rained 20 minutes before the start but by the time we got to the grid there was again a narrow dry line.
Olie made a good start but unfortunately somebody made a flying start from the row behind and then held up a group of three or four riders in front of our rider. Six laps later Olie had passed the group, each lap gritting his teeth at the hairpin and picking off another one. By the time he got to the front of the group he pulled out a second in the first lap and managed to catch and pass Dan Kneen who had gone a few seconds up the road. The next person had pulled a further 10 seconds while Olie was being held up so he finished 13th,with a lap time of 53.290, just 0.8 of a second from the fastest lap, again!

Overall it was a good weekend, and gives the Team a good setup to build on for the rest of the year. The Tam and olie are now hoping for another strong result at the next Superstock 600 round at Cadwell Park, just after the Ulster GP.
