Doldrums for Olie at Snetterton Young guns 19 September 2007

Olie was back to Snetterton for the Second time in a fortnight and the last time this year for the penultimate round of the Michelin Young Guns series. It was the circuit that he had dominated at earlier in the year but he knew it would not be that easy this time...
It was the first time Olie had ridden a modern bike on a short circuit since the Manx and he felt he would struggle slightly. Right from the first qualifying session it was clear that he had suffered by missing the two rounds while he was contesting the Manx GP. He found it hard to get back into the groove, and ended up with a very disappointing speed of 1.14.9 and 6th position on the provisional grid. To put this into context he had recorded a 1.12.4 on my first ride on the 675 in March.
Some changes were made for the second 15 minute qualifying session, experimenting with the lower tyre pressures that everybody had been running all year (24psi!?). Olie pulled the pin on the last lap and produced his best circuit of the weekend with a 1.12.4 to put him fourth on the grid for the Superpole race.
Getting a fairly dissapointing start form the line, Olie was sixth at the end of the first lap. After two more laps the race was stopped because of a fall resulting in LOTS of oil at the esses. A long delay while it was cleared meant the riders had two warm up laps to try and get some heat back into the tyre's, and it was a near carbon copy of the first, slotting into sixth and being very cautious over the masses of oil Olie rode to a 5th place finish at the end of the 5 lap sprint.
On Sunday, Olie was to start the first race from fifth on the grid and he held position into the first corner. Onto the back straight he got such a tow from the four bikes in front of him that he found himself going about 5mph faster than normal! Trying very hard to take the corner, he had to stand the bike up and take to the grass! As he did so he felt an almighty thud as Ricky Chadwick hit him, having had the same problem! As Olie hung on over the bumps there was another bike and rider overtaking him cartwheeling through the air- absolute chaos. Olie rejoined the track in a distinct last position and was sure that the race would be red flagged, but it soon became apparent that it would not, so he got his head down and tried to make up some lost ground, managing to fight his way back up to 9th position at the flag.

The last race of the day Olie felt was the worst he'd had all year. Demoralised after the previous race, he finished in 9th position and not happy about the weekend at all. He said afterwards that he had a lethargic feeling the whole weekend and was very tired after a hard few weeks- so perhaps one off week-end is understandable.
After a debrief, Olie knew that he had the pace and his aim was to do better at the final round in a few weeks time.
After all, everybody remembers the last race!!
